While Swimmers Escaped Danger, Viral Image Captures Rescuer Dashing ‘All Out’ Towards the Scene.
Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the famous beach as her personal space. On that fateful weekend evening, she, like many local residents, heard cracking sounds ringing out around the suburb.
“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Exiting her home, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw signaled trouble had occurred.
Positioned on the road, speaking to a duo who had run up the incline soaked, she noticed someone coming up behind her. It was a beach patrol officer, dashing to Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.
“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one moving in the path that all the others was trying to get away from, and hauling that large equipment and barefoot … He’s running at something that certainly every fibre in your being would instruct you to move in the reverse way.
“Absolutely no pause, but just totally full throttle sprinting.”
An Iconic Image of Courage During Crisis
The photo that Ching snapped of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of instances of heroism in the aftermath of the violent incident.
Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, officers and ambulance crews attending to dozens of those hurt.
Local Outpouring and Assistance
Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to come out of the neighbourhood, with the beach facility adjacent to the scene of the attack serving as a temporary treatment center. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen helping out, such as going into the ocean to save people in distress.
In the days after the tragedy, comments of gratitude were shared. A social media message shared thanks for the responders who demonstrated that “compassion will always overcome hatred”.
The group of rescuers later shared a message, noting they were “processing what occurred”.
“Thank you all for your supportive sentiments and encouragement. We are touched by the care directed at our personnel,” the organization wrote. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the belief that it supports those impacted.”
Local Government Commendation
Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many permanent beach safety officers, said that the crew performed exceptionally from the instant the violence began right into late that nighttime.
“We have heard so many emotional narratives, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is incredible,” commented a local official.
“The team show dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic shores secure for the public, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be commended.
“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the atrocity of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we consider just how much positivity we have observed in the face of such darkness.”
