What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 people were killed and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
