Two Separate Cuba-bound Humanitarian Vessels Listed Missing subsequent to Setting Sail from Mexico.
A large-scale search and rescue mission is actively ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for two lost sailboats transporting aid cargo journeying from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.
Maritime Search Operations Launched
Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and search planes to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying no fewer than 9 personnel, per a military release.
The boats had been scheduled to reach Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their safe arrival, the navy said.
Context of Aid to the Nation
The island nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the country struggles through widespread national electricity failures.
"Both crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are fitted with appropriate navigational gear and signalling equipment," a spokesperson for the convoy stated.
The nine individuals on board are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.
"We are co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.
Previous Relief Delivery
Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare another boat that had delivered a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the island.
That ship, called "a new Granma" in reference to the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, delivered solar panels, medicines, formula milk, cycles and provisions.

Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation came into effect.
International organizations have since warned of "dire" supply shortages, with more than 50k surgical procedures postponed in Cuba due to power shortages.

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations commenced, although their current progress remains uncertain.
The Mexican navy said it was pledged to using every available asset at its command to find the vessels and ensure the safety of the people on board.
At this time, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
