We are verifying video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
