The Reasons Prince Andrew Has Surrendered His Royal Honors – and What It Means for the Royal Family
Through a statement released via Buckingham Palace, the king's brother has declared that he will be giving up his royal titles, including the Duke of York. Below is an overview of what was revealed – and what remains unchanged.
What Has the Prince Said?
Having already stepped down as a working royal in 2019, Andrew has now decided to “take additional measures” and consent to refrain from using the “honor or the honours which have been granted to” him.
However, he used the statement to make a point of rejecting – consistent with his past statements – the accusations of sexual impropriety leveled at him; albeit having paid out a substantial sum to resolve the legal claim filed by Virginia Giuffre – an agreement in which he accepted no fault and strongly rejected any claims of wrongdoing.

The anti-monarchist campaign group Republic has also said the move is “too little, too late”, noting: “The prince continues to be facing allegations of sexual misconduct and misuse of position. He should be stripped of all titles and his navy rank and should face a criminal investigation. Not using archaic honors is not a punishment that fits the offences.”
