The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
