As I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a football he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and natural ability convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Year and Continental Arrival

This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to the title and being named best player.

A month later, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits he must to temper his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.

Currently, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills confidence.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the game.
