Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Jail Diary Documenting Three Weeks In Custody
Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a memoir next month titled Notes from a Cell, which recounts his time endured in jail.
The revelation was made less than two weeks after the ex-leader was released while his appeal proceeds the court ruling for illegal collaboration connected to efforts to acquire election campaign funds linked to the government of Muammar Gaddafi.
Time in Custody: Solitary Musings
“In prison there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he notes in an extract, implying the memoir is more about his thoughts from isolation as opposed to extensive analysis regarding the overcrowded and struggling French prison system.
“I forget silence, which doesn’t exist in La Santé, where there is a lot to hear,” he adds. “The racket persists relentlessly. But, just like the desert, personal reflection grows stronger behind bars.”
Freedom Plea: Recounting the Hardship
During his plea for freedom, he was present remotely from his cell, describing his time inside as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I want to pay tribute those working in the jail, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this ordeal tolerable – as it truly is one.”
“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal forced upon me. I admit it’s difficult, it’s very hard. It affects one on any prisoner as it’s exhausting.”
Historical Context
He, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, set a precedent as past president in the European Union and the first postwar leader from France to be incarcerated.
Prior to imprisonment he had said he would use his time for authoring a memoir.
Cell Library
It remains unclear if he found the opportunity to go through the texts he had in his cell: a life story of Jesus spanning two books plus the novel by Dumas the famous story, a plot where a blameless person is sentenced to jail but escapes to exact retribution.
Daily Reality
The former leader was placed in isolation due to safety concerns in a cell roughly 100 square feet featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility in the city. Security personnel stayed in the next cell.
Sources mentioned that he had eaten only yoghurts in prison because he feared any food could have been tampered with. He had facilities to prepare his own meals but he turned this down, according to reports. Not known is whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.
Legal Perspective
His attorney, Christophe Ingrain each day throughout the jail term, informed the court his safety would improve outside jail compared to inside. “He received death threats, has heard screaming at night and the urgent intervention next door when a prisoner self-harmed.”
Case Background
He entered custody last month following the judiciary gave him five years in prison for illegal collaboration over a scheme to secure campaign funds for his presidential bid.
He disputes the charges challenging the decision, and another court case set for next spring.
