New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point in his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core policy, did not confirm this decision immediately following his victory in November.

"The choice came down to our family's safety and the need to directing my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," Mamdani said on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its diverse cultural enclaves and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, the community will always live a part of me and the work I do," he said.

Political Debate

During his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his opponents, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it should be a space for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting far removed from his previous Astoria home.

With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Within, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed to reflect the home's historical period.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

Tenants see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
