New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities issued security footage Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
