Weather experts are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall expected across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Continue Despite Forecasts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are set to take place, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so additional clothing will be essential," said the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Readings are forecast to be cold, making additional clothing a necessity, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday

Moving into Friday, advisories are in place for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on trains and buses.

Readings Forecast to Plummet Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Advisories Issued

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this signified the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.

The guidance for all is clear: to see the new year in security, preparing for winter conditions is utterly paramount.
