Arsenal's manager remains confident that his side can keep managing with fitness issues following disclosing that star striker Kai Havertz remains out for a few more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for German Star

The German forward has been absent since August following knee surgery. Initially expected to be available sooner, Arteta revealed the player hit a snag when increasing his rehabilitation and was unable to move forward “the required stage.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a team that is much more reliable and has greater depth,” commented Arteta.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This news leaves a selection headache for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. A decision is required between sticking with Mikel Merino, who scored as a makeshift striker against Chelsea, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return after a fitness issue off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is in contention following a lengthy absence.

Defensive Concerns Persist

Additional concerns surround centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Stamford Bridge game. Therefore, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to continue in the backline for the league leaders.

Arteta feels the £250m spend on reinforcements in the last transfer window has left Arsenal in a far better place to navigate such setbacks.

Squad Depth Key to Premier League Pursuit

In response if more options was helping their championship push, his response was positive. “Indeed, since the current term has presented greater challenges in certain positions, and now what’s happening with the backline,” he added.

“We learned from the past that we have to use players in various roles, and they need to be prepared to perform various functions if we aim to challenge at the top. And the instance of Mikel is just the best one.”

Commenting on the delay noted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave additional context. “He was doing everything. He was unable to progress to the next level and now it appears like we have overcome that hurdle.”

Arteta expressed his keenness to have him back. “The team is keen to have him. Truly, Havertz is someone that, personally, I admire greatly for what he brings to the team, but his personality, his personality. I see him suffer on the sidelines.”
