Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year left on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
