Israelis commemorate second remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza peace negotiations continue
People have come together around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership postponed state memorials until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' negotiating teams met in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the plan.
A prominent representative knowledgeable about the negotiations revealed that an evening round of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the day's discussions finished without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not recommence fighting after the opening period of the agreement.
He commented that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are striving to narrow the differences between the two sides.
Essential Points in Discussions
- A lasting truce
- The exchange of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance deliveries
- Future governance of the region
Public Feeling
In the city's Hostages Square previously, young a woman - whose family member survived the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No location seems like home anymore and until every captive are released no one will be secure."
"After we see all home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to express their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel reports nearly fifty continue in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Activist Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the hostages to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately seventy percent of the population desire the conflict to conclude in return for the liberation of the captives.
Gaza Conditions
At the area of the gathering, grieving people came together to remember the victims.
From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli attacks persisted.
In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the western district, sector and Nasr areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"Once the dusk comes, the fear appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, shared.
"We are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we look at the updates to see what happened. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."
Medical Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had accepted the remains of several people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of the city indicated another two dead people had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the south region, health workers stated.
