Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major explosions shaking Tehran, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not immediately provide additional information.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Prior Events
This event occurs against a background of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Key developments leading up to this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the region, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of further talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected claims about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation remains fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as the situation develops.
