No league markets equal footing as effectively as the NFL: it defines their identity. However, after the first ten matchups of this season, this isn’t a league featuring uniform distribution among elite teams, poor performers, and average squads. Rather, we see a situation where most of the league are merely adequate.

NFC Clarity

In the NFC, at least, there is some clarity. Los Angeles and Seattle (both at 7-2) look like the most balanced franchises across the league, and achieved blowout wins on Sunday. The 6-2 Eagles even with their challenges still have among the most gifted lineups in the league, similar to Green Bay (5-2-1). Even the Lions (6-3), with their fluctuating form on offense and defense and navigating internal staff conflicts, have shown they can hammer strong franchises. For all five, you can still easily put together a Super Bowl path.

Muddled AFC Picture

In the AFC however, postseason landscape remains completely chaotic. Your four division leaders through ten weeks: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (each with 8-2 records) and the Steelers (5-4 record). Consider that carefully. No Chiefs presence. Not the Bills. Baltimore and Cincinnati are absent. The traditional powers, featuring premier quarterback talent, possess either significant personnel gaps or have suffered medical setbacks.

Parity Mechanics

In some ways, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. But watching the current division frontrunners in the American Football Conference continues to seem unusual. Aspects of each franchise meet championship standards, though not comprehensively. If you were asked to lock in your AFC title game selections right now, would you confidently select any one of the four division leaders?

Squad Examinations

Colts Situation

First, examining Indianapolis, their quarterback hasn’t quite reached pumpkin status. However, recent performances have raised concerns. He's reverting to turning over the ball and failing against blitzes. He took seven sacks against the Falcons on Sunday, and had a brief period in which he threw an intercepted pass and lost three fumbles. This is a week after he turned the ball over five separate times versus Pittsburgh.

Indianapolis' offensive unit excelled during early games because Jones avoided catastrophic mistakes. The running back and protection unit make the Colts able to withstand some negative plays, as they did in Berlin. However, if Jones reverts to his previous error-filled form would end postseason aspirations.

New England Analysis

New England appears relatively comparable. Previously, they were a punchline. Now, they’re the NFL's most pleasant shock and the hottest team in the NFL post seven wins in a row. Had it not been for committing turnover errors a manageable matchup versus the Steelers, they’d be sitting at 9–1 with the top standing. In the prior year, they seemed veteran and plodding. Now they’re youthful, quick and confident. Still, it’s hard to ignore how soft the Patriots’ schedule has been. They have faced the most manageable schedule throughout football, and there have still been cracks. Their quarterback has been sacked 35 times – ranking second league-wide – with several hits he suffered last weekend appeared dangerous. As the season progresses, that punishment compounds.

Denver Analysis

Denver stands at eight wins similarly, yet it seems like they're nervously waiting. The Denver signal-caller has been erratic, with the attack struggling, as the defense handles most of the responsibility. Lacking competent QB performance, Denver cannot intimidate anyone in the postseason. Los Angeles remains nearby in the Western division at 7-2, yet medical problems within their blocking corps will make it tough to achieve championship contention.

Pittsburgh Situation

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh exists, somehow still leading the Northern division even after suffering a decisive loss to Los Angeles on Sunday night. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defense too often disappears, with their quarterback's restrictions during his career phase regularly manifest. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, however, the Ravens, featuring a recovered Jackson and facing easier opponents, are riding a three-game streak. This development isn't entirely shocking that the Ravens have pulled within a game of the Steelers, but how rapidly this occurred highlights deficiencies within Pittsburgh's fluctuating form. That the Ravens started the season 1-5 and still look like they should win the division is telling about the complete conference.

Traditional Powers

The Ravens' form part of the Big Three – joined by Buffalo and Kansas City – powered by their MVP quarterbacks, who could still create the most fear among competitors should they reach postseason. They're the teams everyone hopes to avoid, however, both franchises cannot get out of their own way.

Buffalo Analysis

Previously, the Bills were riding high after beating the Chiefs. This weekend they encountered a particularly discouraging setback during the campaign. They didn't merely fall to the Dolphins; they looked terrible, falling 30-13 on the road. It was Miami’s first win versus Buffalo in several seasons.
