Christantus Uche Sparks Comfortable Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their maiden continental adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are learning very quickly. Without key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding win that virtually secures them a place in the Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match provided a platform for several Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second game in match.
A Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season proved no match against a largely rotated Palace outfit. The Londoners were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg problems.
Dominance Established from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the official waved away the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
