Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
The co-founders behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the company alongside his partner, announced that he plans to personally create the controversial flavor within a personal collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators versus Parent Company
This latest announcement deepens the ongoing tension among the world-famous ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed that the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Flavor as an Emblem of Solidarity
The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas regarding naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become an emblem of support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism plus Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.
The new product line is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand that originally created several years back for endorsing former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts plus Future Plans
The founder revealed that he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties that address issues which the company was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's in September, following decades with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how its independence was compromised after Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented how “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence so that the company can actualise the social mission, the values that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
